An Exclusive Interview with Managing Director of Lanka IOC, Dipak Das
Lanka IOC has solidified its presence in Sri Lanka’s energy sector, and with it, Servo Lubricants has emerged as a cornerstone of the company’s portfolio. In an interview with Ceylon Today, Managing Director of Lanka IOC, Dipak Das, discusses the elements behind the popular lubricant brand’s success and his plans for the future, including its expansion.
Servo Lubricants has gained significant traction in the Sri Lankan market. How would you describe its performance in recent years?
Servo Lubricants has performed exceptionally well, becoming a trusted brand across diverse industries. Despite a challenging global economic climate, we’ve witnessed steady growth in market share, especially in key sectors such as automotive, industrial, and agricultural applications. Our focus on delivering consistent quality and innovation in lubricant technology has been central to this success. We’ve managed to carve out a niche as a reliable partner for personal and commercial vehicle users, as well as large-scale industrial enterprises.
What factors have contributed to this strong market acceptance?
Several key factors have contributed. Firstly, the reputation for quality that Servo has built over the years has played a significant role. Our products are engineered to meet and exceed international standards, which has resonated well with consumers and industries alike. Additionally, our broad product portfolio caters to various segments — from high-performance motor oils for cars and bikes to specialised industrial lubricants. A strong retail presence and after-sales support have also enhanced brand visibility and trust in the marketplace.
The Sri Lankan lubricant market is home to many leading international brands. What unique proposition does Servo bring to the table?
We operate a state-of-the-art lube blending facility in Sri Lanka with computer-aided centralised automated operations, ensuring precision and efficiency. Moreover, our formulations are backed by the expertise of Asia’s largest research and development facility, owned by our parent company, IOCL. This provides us with access to the latest lubricant technologies prevailing in advanced economies.
Additionally, we source our raw materials only from leading global suppliers across regions such as the Middle East, Singapore, the US, and Europe. The pivotal aspect of Servo Lubricants — the promise of world-class quality — is ensured at each stage by our fully equipped ISO 9001-accredited Quality Control laboratory. Notably, we operate Sri Lanka’s only grease manufacturing facility in Trincomalee.
How has the public response been to the Servo range, particularly in comparison to competitors in the Sri Lankan market?
The response has been very encouraging. We see a growing base of loyal customers who recognise the superior performance of our lubricants. Many have switched to Servo from other brands after experiencing the difference in engine efficiency, longevity, and fuel economy. This shift is especially evident among fleet owners and heavy machinery operators, where reliability and cost-effectiveness are paramount. Servo Lubricants are highly regarded for their ability to meet local environmental and climatic conditions, which sets us apart from many global competitors.
Can you share insights on Servo Lubricants’ reach across the island?
We have worked diligently to ensure that Servo Lubricants are accessible throughout Sri Lanka. They are available at 2,500 customer touchpoints, including over 256 LIOC petrol sheds, 300 exclusive Servo Shops, and 32 authorised Servo Lubricant distributors. Servo Lubricants are also available at CPC petrol sheds island-wide. We’ve established strong distribution networks to serve remote areas, ensuring that even rural industries have access to premium lubricants. Soon, our lubricants will also be available on popular e-commerce platforms, making it easier than ever to order with just a click. This extensive reach has allowed us to grow our customer base in both urban and rural markets, making Servo a household name for lubricants across the island.
Looking ahead, what are the future expansion plans for Servo Lubricants in Sri Lanka?
We have ambitious plans for the future. Our immediate focus is on expanding our market share further through innovative Hybrid Car Engine Oil with the latest international specifications, highly suitable for Japanese, European, and even US car brands. A high-performance Bike Engine Oil, crafted to meet the evolving needs of discerning bikers, is also set to hit the shelves. We’re dedicated to supporting industries with value-driven solutions for both general and specialised machines and equipment.
